The speed of changes
Let me state a truism: the world is changing faster and faster. Here’s another truism: those who adapt most quickly to changing conditions are the ones who survive and thrive.
Following this logic, it would seem advantageous for an individuals to understand the society they live in, where it’s heading and what will be in demand — and then move in the same direction. As far as I can tell, many people build their lives around this paradigm. Personally, however, I find this approach both too simplified and, in a sense, "enslaved." It is too simplified because it fails to take into account for negative trends and the deterioration of the life quality in certain aspects. It is "enslaved" because it treats social norm as objective norms, leading individuals to adopt these external standards as their own personal ones.
Consider, for instance, the rapid adoption of neural networks for generating text, images, audio, and video content (hereinafter referred to as "AI," though I would hesitate to actually call these networks "intelligence"). Previous technological innovations that have become an essential part of modern life (the internet and mobile communication) took about a decade to grow from 20% to 80% users in population. In contrast, AI went from "widespread recognition" (the release of ChatGPT) to "widespread use" in just four years, and from 20% to 70–80% users in a mere two to three years.
In my personal lifestyle, I tend to be quite conservative. This is most evident in the fact that I do not have a smartphone with mobile internet access. I do own a smartphone, which I occasionally take with me, for example, if I think I need to take a photo or quickly find my way around an unfamiliar area (I keep offline maps downloaded). I also have a mobile phone with internet access, but it’s a Nokia with 2G and many buttons. If necessary, I can use it to perform a quick Google search, check the latest posts on a Telegram channel, or look up public transport schedules. However, without a computer, I generally cannot write in messengers, watch videos, or engage in similar activities.
There are several reasons for such conservatism (and not just when it comes to phones):
1. It’s just a habit of a certain way of life — I’m doing well in these conditions, and there’s no need to change them.
2. A desire to stand out. It’s not cool, but I honestly admit that it’s one of the reasons. Actually I don’t really stand out publicly (nobody sees it and cares), but that doesn’t bother me or hurt my feelings. It turns out that I stand out for myself, rather than for the sake of making an impression on others.
3. A lack of confidence in my own ability to contend with the negative aspects of technological innovations, specifically, the vulnerability of the human psyche to the tactics employed by app developers, and the vulnerability of the devices themselves to data theft.
I don’t want to waste my attention. I don’t want to fall victim to manipulations. I don’t want to outsource my thinking and decision-making. Damn it, I don’t want a generated answer for every single search I make. To select ten links (with Wikipedia at the top) for a search query like "the capital of Singapore" requires far fewer computations, and, consequently, consumes far fewer scarce physical resources than generating an answer inside the "black box" of a neural network. And to top it all off, they don’t even provide an option in the settings to disable these AI-generated responses! It’s an astonishing level of forced feature integration. Of course! They’re hell-bent on embedding AI into every aspect of our daily lives, fostering a habit of mindless convenience, all so they can eventually start charging for it and finally recoup their investments.
I believe that living in accordance with one’s own principles, ideals, and decisions, along with freedom of thought and a clear conscience, is more important than the extra comfort or socially approved success that might come from following trends. Of course, this excludes extreme scenarios. If there were no remaining ways to earn a living that didn’t conflict with my principles, I would have to compromise them, but the less I have to compromise, the better.
From what I’ve wrote, it might seem like I’m someone who stands on a moral high ground, living in perfect accordance with my own principles — but that’s certainly not the case. It’s an ideal I’d like to strive toward, but, as is the case for everyone, I find it difficult. In some areas (like how I use technology or my choice to be vegan) it comes easily; in others, such as my professional life, it’s a different story. I work in the buying and selling of non-essential goods — toys for teenagers and young adults. I see no real value in this; instead, I see tons of useless junk and wasted resources. Yet, this is the work that has supported me for over a decade — in fact, it’s the only kind of work I’ve ever known. And more likely as long as there’s a demand for it and it remains profitable (as long as it continues to provide my livelihood) I will keep doing it. To ease my conscience, I hope to eventually take on additional work that is genuinely beneficial to society and the environment.
P.S. I’ve decided that after writing posts in Russian, I’ll run them through a translator (ah, technology, am I hypocrite?), check the text, and add the translation below. This particular post turned out a bit stern(?), and I hope there won’t be any more quite like it :)
